Lights.. camera.. and all the behind-the-scenes Block action

As our couples scrambled to finish yet another two rooms, it seemed the smallest room in the house provided one of the most challenging renovating tasks. The powder room under the stairs was flushed with drama as builders and Blockheads went head-to-head with Keith the Blockinator!

Let’s take a look at what other surprises were revealed in Week 3.

Dani & Dan

This dynamic duo are certainly one of The Block’s most competitive teams, cleverly playing their one-point advantage to snare their second room win by the smallest of margins from Mike & Andrew.

While Dan & Dani originally disagreed on the positioning of our Espresso Cone pendant in dark coffee/gold, the judges, who loved the sophisticated styling, embraced the effect in the finished room. The richness and serenity in the aptly titled ‘Blue Room’ was certainly enhanced by the use of our LEDlux 14W Round Downlights in White with Warm White Globes. 

And for the third week in a row, this energy-conscious couple chose our super efficient Airfusion Climate DC Ceiling Fan in Brushed Chrome.

Mike & Andrew

Last week’s winners were pipped at the post by Dani & Dan’s bonus point, but their cool multifunctional kid’s room was definitely the judges' choice. We loved the idea that the room was adaptable for all ages – from playful kids to twittering teenagers.

Our popular LEDlux 14W Round Downlights in White with Warm White Globes were set in the high ceilings, while the Cascade Ceiling Fan in White will ensure the room keeps its cool - effortlessly controlled with an LCD Fan Remote.

The boys' powder room, although a little rough around the edges, did impress with the use of LED lights around the mirror to create glamour and sophistication while saving electricity.

Dale & Sophie

This quirky couple attempted a more sophisticated design in their bedroom, but Sophie’s creativity still shone through in playful touches such as the addition of the slightly kitsch, but much-loved bunny.

The judges noted how the room had a sunny, restful feeling that was certainly enhanced by the use of our breezy Cascade Ceiling Fan in White and the positioning of the LEDlux 14W Round Downlights in White bouncing light off the rear wall, creating a warm, inviting ambience.

The earthiness of the exposed brick in the little room under the stairs was perfectly offset by the contemporary LEDlux downlights.

Brad & Lara

These guys obviously love a walk-in wardrobe and we love how they take risks week after week with their design choices.

Although the bedhead/room divider certainly divided the judges, the overall feeling was that this room had the look and feel of a boutique hotel. The clever addition of our Targa Wall Bracket Lights next to the bed added a distinctive designer touch. Think about wall lights as a great alternative to traditional bedside or lounge lamps for something different.

Brad & Lara used our Cascade Ceiling Fan once again, this time in brushed chrome with silver blades, and matching Neptune Square Downlights in Brushed Chrome for the room's general lighting.

And as we’re big on energy-saving ideas ourselves, we were hugely impressed with their water-saving built-in basin over the toilet in their powder room. Brilliant!

Lights.. camera.. and all the behind-the-scenes Block action

They called it Hell Week, and the challenge of producing not one, but two rooms! - a master bedroom and ensuite - proved to be just that for our teams. But seeing what they’ve managed to achieve in just one hellish week is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Let’s turn our designer eyes to the results of Week 2.

Andrew & Mike

The winners of this week’s challenge impressed the judges with their luxurious hotel-style bedroom and ensuite design. Described as sophisticated and classic, the restrained elegance of the room won the day. The judges especially loved how the brothers had lowered the ceiling to disguise the curtain rails. Our versatile LEDlux 14W Round Downlights in White with Cool White globes were housed in the new construction with the cool white light complementing the muted grey tones of the room.

Sophie & Dale

The renovation rookies again managed to disguise a lack of experience with Sophie’s unique creative touches. Her much-lauded empty jar light design made another appearance in the form of hanging pendants as bed lights.

These eclectic touches, combined with our contemporary LEDlux 14W downlights were a great mix of form and function. We were especially proud of the Cascade Ceiling Fan in white, with a matching LCD fan remote added for ease.

Brad & Lara

How inspired was Brad and Lara’s recessed wall in the bedroom, which cleverly disguised the ‘luscious’ walk in wardrobe. Mood lighting in a bedroom is all-important, and the placement of surface-mounted downlights in satin chrome (available in-store at Beacon Lighting) just above the bed certainly created a sexy look and feel.

For general lighting in the room, the couple chose our Neptune Square Downligts in brushed chrome.

The restoration of the original ceiling rose, which housed our Cascade Ceiling Fan in brushed chrome with silver blades, attracted appreciative compliments from the judges.

Dan & Dani

While the original front-runners were let down by their final finishes in the bathroom, we loved the feeling of their master bedroom. The DC Ceiling Fan in brushed chrome blended beautifully with the contemporary blue and grey tones they chose as their colour palette. The addition of this particular fan makes this room cutting edge in energy-saving technology because it uses 40% less electricity than standard ceiling fans.

Well we finally got to see the exciting first room reveal from The Block and what an incredible job all the teams have done in such a short space of time.

If you were watching closely, you might have noticed the judges talking about not only how a room looks, but ‘feels’. Lighting plays a huge part in creating ambience and mood - you’ve only got to check out Sophie’s homemade pendants to realise just how much it can add to a room!

So how did the teams do in Week 1?

Dani & Dan won the first round with their guest bedroom/study combination. Their use of downlights was great for this multitasking room as they can be used as directional lighting for studying and dimmed for sleepy time. The DC Ceiling Fan in brushed chrome added to the modern feel, and is a smart choice in more ways than one. DC technology uses 40% less electricity than standard ceiling fans, which is a huge selling point for energy-conscious homebuyers.

Dale & Sophie For first time renovators, these guys really impressed with their determination and originality in their dining room. Sophie used to be a graphic designer, which really shows in her artistic flair and penchant for eclectic pieces. Her pendant made from empty jars was inspired – and the judges loved it! In fact, these lights were the room’s highlight.

Brad & Lara made a bold choice by turning a period room into a contemporary living room. In keeping with their geometric styling, they chose Neptune Square Downlights in brushed chrome, perfect for a multi-functional room. The Cyclops Floor Lamp in Chrome (available in-store at Beacon Lighting) added fantastic visual interest and dimension to a bare corner while highlighting a favourite piece of furniture.

Mike & Andrew  Like Dani & Dan, the brothers also chose a guest bedroom/study combination but had a secret weapon up their sleeve. The concealed bed was a surprising choice as was their interesting mix of lighting.

The Centaur floor lamp added a cool modern touch, which was dramatically juxtaposed against the warmth of the intricately woven Cayman wood pendant.
