We opened our first store in Prahran, Victoria in 1967 and our first franchise store in Frankston, Victoria in 1989. The first 30 years saw continued store expansion in Victoria and significant changes including introducing large format stores and new merchandise display systems for consistency in stock presentation, whilst also commencing direct importing of products.
In 1997, we decided to expand interstate with ambitions of becoming a national retailer. The following eight years saw continued store expansion and of particular significance being the successful entry into the New South Wales market creating a true national presence in each state and territory.
In 2003, we commenced operation of our current Melbourne-based warehouse which was expanded to 10,000m2 with a capacity of 10,000 pallets in 2007.
In 2007, our website was re-launched with online purchasing now available.
Our business was awarded The Age / D&B Victorian Retail Category Business of the Year award in 2007, 2009 and 2011 and was the Overall Award Winner in both 2007 and 2011. In FY2012, the new business division of Beacon International were introduced.

As Australia's leading specialist retailer of lights, fans and globes, we have invested significant resources in product design, innovation and quality.
A key strategy for our merchandising team has been to ensure we obtain products at multiple price points to create a ‘good, better, best’ product offer. This allows us to create quality products with different features and price points to meet the needs of different customer segments within the primary target market. For instance, in the LED downlight category, we offer ‘good, better and best’ products. All effectively have the same function but each differs significantly in relation to specifications, designs, features, benefits, and pricing. This is consistent with our strategy of providing fashionable and technologically advanced products that provide value to customers.
The vast majority of our exclusive products are designed and sourced internationally from third party factories and co-ordinated with our teams in those locations. A small proportion of stock is also supplied through local wholesalers in Australia. Our business strategy is to have a broad supply base so that we are not materially reliant on any single factory or supplier for continuity of supply. Our entire product range is manufactured to comply with Australian Standards and packaged to our specifications. This process is monitored and managed through our engineering and quality control team.
More than 90% of our products supplied to our Company stores are self-sourced and distributed through our supply chain incorporating the warehouse in Melbourne and third party warehouse operations in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and China. The third party warehouses stock and supply the local stores thereby improving service levels to our stores and in turn our customers. The warehouse operation in China acts as a central storage facility for key lines of the Australian operation and also supplies the Beacon International wholesale business based in Hong Kong with a showroom in China.
Our supply chain is managed through an integrated point of sale and warehouse management system which automates the stock replenishment process. Store sales are reconciled daily which triggers warehouse orders to be picked and dispatched promptly reducing risk of out-of-stock items in stores.
The vertically integrated approach to bringing products into the business has enabled us to generate gross profit margins that capture the equivalent of the wholesale margin in addition to a retail margin whilst offering competitive pricing to our customers.
Our customers are central to everything we do. We strive to offer the best in customer service that exceeds expectations and delights our customers.
